Global Survey of Pregnancy Associated Acute Kidney Injury
Pregnancy-related acute kidney injury (PrAKI) is a significant contributor to maternal and neonatal morbidity an mortality, especially in pre-eclampsia, haemorrhage and sepsis. It increases maternal death rate by 4.5 times and the risk of pregnancy complications by 3.5 times. It is much more common in ow-and middle-income countries and when it happens here mother and their babies are even more likely to die. PrAKI robs families of caregivers and breadwinners, while survivors face long-term health challenges necessitating costly and often inaccessible dialysis treatment.
Midwives are crucial in addressing this global crisis as PrAKI can often be prevented by good antenatal care and timely identification and escalation.
To understand the barriers to diagnosis and treatment of PrAKI in various settings, a global survey will be launched on International Day of the Midwife (5 May 2025) and closes on World Preeclampsia Day (22 May 2025). The results will be used to inform the next steps in addressing this global problems.
All midwives, nurses, doctors and birth workers are invited to complete this survey which is available in a number of languages. Please share widely!
